Tina* had experienced family violence at the hands of her husband who was convicted for his abuse and went to prison.

Following his imprisonment, Tina’s home was repossessed and sold at auction, with a shortfall debt of nearly $60,000.  With two dependent children to support and suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder as a result of her violent relationship, Tina needed assistance.

Tina initially spoke with a financial counsellor who was able to negotiate the shortfall debt down to $15,000, to be paid from the criminal injuries compensation settlement Tina had received.  Her financial counsellor advised Tina to speak to the Consumer Credit Legal Service too.

Consumer Credit Legal Service were able to assist Tina by drafting a ‘deed of settlement.’  This legally binding document settled the debt dispute and ensured Tina was no longer chased by debt collectors.
